A recent study has sparked a conversation about driving behaviors in the United States, particularly highlighting Southern California as a hotspot for poor driving habits. According to CBS News, the latest findings from ConsumerAffairs rank two cities in San Bernardino County among the top five worst driving locations in the country for 2024.

The research utilized data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, analyzing factors such as the frequency of fatal accidents per 100,000 people, the number of death-related incidents tied to reckless driving, alcohol-related fatalities, and deaths resulting from speeding. The results revealed that Victorville and San Bernardino City ranked second and fourth, respectively, each scoring over 60 on a scale of 100.

Memphis, Tennessee, has claimed the title of the worst driving city for two consecutive years, while Macon, Georgia, secured the third position and Jackson, Mississippi, came in fifth.

Victorville’s high ranking can be attributed to its alarming rate of alcohol-related traffic fatalities, which was the second highest in the nation. Additionally, the city ranked fifth for fatalities related to speeding. While San Bernardino City ranked slightly lower, it recorded a higher number of alcohol-related deaths (7.7 per 100,000 people) and deaths linked to speeding (11.3 per 100,000 people) compared to Victorville.

Despite these two cities making headlines for their driving records, California as a whole ranked 33rd among all 50 states, indicating that the state’s overall performance isn’t as dire. The study defined poor driving behaviors to include aggressive or careless driving, driving in the wrong direction, failing to yield, illegal passing, and making illegal turns.

Other Southern California cities also made it into the top 50 worst driving locations nationwide, with Fontana ranked 31st, Riverside at 40th, Orange at 43rd, and Corona coming in at 47th.
