The Israeli military confirmed on October 22 that Hashem Safieddine, who was seen as the successor to the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, was killed in an airstrike on October 4 in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
According to the Israeli forces, the airstrike targeted Hezbollah’s underground intelligence headquarters in Beirut’s southern suburbs. Along with Safieddine, the attack also claimed the lives of Hezbollah’s intelligence chief Ali Hussein Hazima and approximately 25 other members, including several senior commanders.
Since the airstrike, there has been no communication from Safieddine, and it wasn’t until now that the Israeli military confirmed his death. Hezbollah has not yet announced this news.
In 2017, Safieddine was designated as a terrorist by the U.S. State Department. He was a cousin of Nasrallah and, much like him, was known for wearing a black headscarf, signifying his lineage as a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
