Sino-Portuguese Joint Research Institute on Climate and Energy was inaugurated in Lisbon, Portugal
On October 14, 2023, it was announced that the China-Portugal Joint Research Institute for Climate and Energy was officially inaugurated in Lisbon, Portugal.
The signing and unveiling ceremony took place on October 11 at the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute. In the presence of Chinese Ambassador to Portugal Zhao Bintang, Rogério Colaço, President of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute, and Bao Zhidong, Vice President of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), signed a memorandum to establish the joint research institute and subsequently unveiled the plaque.
In his speech, President Colaço congratulated the establishment of the institute. He expressed appreciation for the collaboration between the young faculty members from both institutions and looked forward to enhanced cooperation between China and Portugal in the fields of climate and energy, fostering friendlier exchanges between the two nations.
Vice President Bao highlighted that this year marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal. He emphasized the significance of their collaboration in artificial intelligence and climate energy during this crucial time of addressing global climate change. The establishment of the China-Portugal Joint Research Institute for Climate and Energy represents a milestone in educational and technological cooperation, which will significantly advance talent development and scientific research in future technologies for carbon neutrality. Together, both institutions aim to actively contribute to tackling climate change.
Ambassador Zhao noted that both the Chinese and Portuguese governments place a high priority on research in climate and energy. He believes that the friendly cooperation between China and Portugal in this field will mark a new chapter in their friendship. The collaboration among young scientists symbolizes the future and hope for the cooperation between the two countries and is expected to empower both nations to contribute to global initiatives for a green, low-carbon, and sustainable development pathway.
