On October 27, a significant exhibition titled “Youth Without Regrets: The Historical Exhibition of the Diaoyu Fishing Island Protection and Unification Movement” opened at the Shanghai Historical Museum, organized by the Shanghai Taiwan Association. This exhibition will run until November 10.

The exhibition benefits from the collaboration of Tsinghua University Library’s Center for Research and Collection of Diaoyu Protection Materials, showcasing a wealth of valuable historical photos and artifacts. It provides a comprehensive overview of the patriotic youth movement in the 1970s, primarily led by Taiwanese students living in Europe and America. These young people championed the principle of “One China,” steadfastly defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The exhibition highlights their unity and determination in the face of external challenges, underscoring a profound spirit of patriotism that reflects the historical inevitability of unification across the Taiwan Strait.

During the opening ceremony, several key figures attended, including Zhou Qi, Vice President of the National Taiwan Association; Dong Yiwen, Executive Vice President of the Shanghai Chinese Peaceful Unification Promotion Association; Yang Lihua, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Taiwan Affairs Office; Meng Jianjun, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Overseas Chinese Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee; former President of the Taiwan Student Association, Yang Sizhe; and Zhou Qunhua, Director of the Shanghai Historical Museum, who all participated in the unveiling of the exhibition.

The organizers hope this exhibition will further ignite the patriotic spirit among compatriots at home and abroad, fostering unity and continuity of the “Diaoyu Protection and Unification Movement.” They aim to promote cross-strait integration and development, protect the shared homeland of the Chinese nation, and work together towards the complete unification of the country and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

On the same day, representatives from the Taiwan region who played key roles in the “Diaoyu Protection” initiative, along with elderly Taiwanese who witnessed the movement in the United States during the 1970s, relevant scholars on the Diaoyu Islands issue, and leaders of Taiwanese associations from various districts in Shanghai gathered to witness the opening of this important exhibition and view a documentary related to the historical materials. Guests from both sides of the strait also participated in discussions regarding the contemporary significance of the “Diaoyu Protection and Unification Movement.”
