The historic Stanton Carriage House in Pasadena’s sought-after Grace Hill neighborhood is now available for $1,995,000. This remarkable triplex, which dates back 133 years, offers a generous total floor area of 3,480 square feet. Having previously served as rental apartments, it has generated an impressive annual income of $107,988, making it an attractive choice for both investors and those looking for personal use.

The largest unit, located on the second floor, spans 1,800 square feet and includes two bedrooms, a dressing room, a sunroom, and a separate kitchen and dining area. A balcony provides stunning views of the San Gabriel Valley. The other two units are approximately 800 square feet each; one features a bedroom with a living area that opens to a balcony, while the other has two bedrooms and a living space. Overall, the property comprises five bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Recognized for its historical significance, records of the home are preserved at the Pasadena Museum of History. The original owner, William Stanton, moved from the Midwest to Pasadena, where he practiced law. Interestingly, he is said to be related to one of President Lincoln’s Secretaries of War.

Originally built as a carriage house and stable, the property was designed by architect Frederick L. Roehrig, celebrated for his work on Castle Green. The carriage house is distinguished by its striking Queen Anne architectural style and initially featured a 50,000-gallon water tower, as running water was not available at the time. As Pasadena expanded, this water tower was converted into an auxiliary structure, shaping the property’s current layout.

Following the deaths of William and his wife, their daughter subdivided the estate, leading to the remodeling of the building into eight rental units in the 1920s. The current owners acquired the property in 1973 and updated it after the original couple passed away, continuing its rental legacy.

While the house retains its original exterior charm, the interior has been modernized with amenities such as central air conditioning, independent water heaters, and updated plumbing and electrical systems. Each unit features hardwood floors and kitchens equipped with stone countertops and moisture-resistant wall tiles.
