Jiujiang, Jiangxi- Develop sports industry and strengthen event economy
On the evening of October 22nd, the atmosphere in the sports park of Ruichang City, located in Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, was electrifying as the 14th Jiujiang Sports Games officially kicked off amidst resounding applause and excitement at 8 PM.
In his opening remarks, Jiang Wending, Deputy Secretary of the Jiujiang Municipal Committee and Mayor, noted the significance of the event: “This is the first comprehensive sports event hosted by Jiujiang since it was designated as the host city for the Jiangxi Provincial Games, and notably, this is the first time a county-level city is undertaking this responsibility. The anticipation surrounding this event is palpable. In recent years, Jiujiang has actively implemented a strategy for national fitness, accelerated its efforts to build a strong athletic city, and has seen a surge in community sports activities. Our achievements in competitive sports are remarkable, and the development of the sports industry has been vibrant, yielding notable results across the city.”
The night’s festivities included a colorful artistic performance themed “Great River, Strong Nation,” which featured segments like “The Waters of the Yangtze and the Light of Bronze,” “Songs of Mountains and Streams,” and “Continuing the Flame, Striving Forward.” Each chapter of the performance dazzled the audience, showcasing the spirit and legacy of the Jiujiang people who carry forward their red genes and strive for excellence.
A highlight of the evening was the torch relay and lighting ceremony. Since August 22nd, the torch has been passed through various locations in Jiujiang, culminating at the sports park in Ruichang. Torchbearers Zhou Junjun and Wang Lina passed the flame to Gao Yulan, a silver medalist in the women’s double sculls at the Beijing Olympics. The audience held their breath as Gao, holding the torch, approached the ignition platform. With a spectacular display of fireworks, the main torch tower was lit, marking a triumphant moment.
This event, organized by the Jiujiang Municipal Government and hosted by the Jiujiang Sports Bureau and the Ruichang Municipal Government, will run until October 29th. Nearly 7,000 athletes from Jiujiang will compete across 26 major events and 478 sub-events.
