Guangxi improves grain storage facilities to protect grain supply security
On October 16, a representative from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region’s Grain and Material Reserves Bureau shared insights on the region’s ongoing efforts to enhance grain processing and logistics infrastructure. The booming luosifen (snail rice noodle) industry in Liuzhou has created a significant demand for high-quality rice, prompting local officials to focus on improving storage facilities to ensure stable supply and quality of raw grains. This initiative serves as a model for optimizing the overall grain logistics system across the region.
October 16 also marks World Food Day, coinciding with the kickoff of the main event in Guangxi for the 2024 World Food Day and the National Food Security Awareness Week.
This year, Guangxi has made significant strides in advancing 30 grain reserve projects, with plans to add and renovate storage capacity exceeding 200,000 tons. These enhancements aim to bolster the region’s grain logistics capabilities. Additionally, Guangxi is actively promoting green storage technologies and optimizing its low-temperature storage layout. Currently, low-temperature storage capacity has reached 676,900 tons, greatly improving grain preservation quality and reducing losses. The region is also pushing for digital upgrades to storage facilities, implementing intelligent monitoring systems for real-time management of grain conditions to ensure safety.
Currently, the grain storage capacity across Guangxi meets national standards, guaranteeing a minimum supply for four and a half months. Farmers are enthusiastically delivering grains to various purchase points, reflecting a strong harvest this year. The government has proactively allocated 2.4 billion yuan for purchasing grains, preparing 1 million tons of storage capacity and organizing 225 transportation vehicles to facilitate smooth grain acquisitions. Almost 2,000 staff members are actively involved in frontline operations to ensure the effectiveness of policy-driven grain purchases and secure food supply.
With its favorable environment, Guangxi is a key area for indica rice production in South China. This year, the province’s rice subsidy purchase policy has been implemented smoothly. As of October 10, a total of 565,900 tons of policy-supported rice have been purchased, which represents 70.7% of the annual goal, reflecting an efficient grain reserve management system in operation.
