On October 15th, a new book launch and expert seminar for “Scholarship Series: Collected Works of Critics from Anhui” took place in Beijing, organized by the China Contemporary Literature Research Association and Anhui Publishing Group, with Anhui Literature and Art Publishing House handling the event. This series includes eight new works from notable critics hailing from Anhui: He Xiangyang, Liu Qiong, Pan Kaixiong, Gao Yuanbao, Wang Binbin, Hong Zhigang, Liu Daxian, and Yang Qingxiang.

During the event, Li Jingze, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Writers Association, addressed the audience, stating that the term “Anhui” is used thoughtfully. He elaborated that “Anhui” signifies more than just a geographical space; it represents a rich cultural and historical context. He mentioned the legacy of Yan Fu, who translated “Evolution and Ethics,” and how he enlisted Wu Rulun from the Tongcheng School for refinement, noting that this literary lineage from Tongcheng continues to thrive. He emphasized that Anhui has produced numerous influential critics, now considered a vital force in Chinese literary criticism.

He Xiangyang, head of the Research Department of the Chinese Writers Association and one of the series editors, highlighted that “Anhui” serves as recognition, a reminder, and an identity. “Even though we may live far from home,” he noted, “our hometown remains like a kite string, always pulling us back, reminding us of the land that flows through our words.” He expressed that creative works are akin to seeds that require diligent nurturing by editors and publishers, cultivated in rich soil to grow into sturdy trees that can be appreciated by a broader audience.

Liu Qiong, another chief editor of the series, commented on the pivotal role critics play in observing and analyzing literature, providing a balanced perspective that enriches creative work. Hong Zhigang, with over thirty years in literary research, added that literary criticism is a highly specialized endeavor, emphasizing its importance in facilitating a subtle dialogue between the critic and the author while engaging with the text.

During the event, Anhui Publishing Group donated a set of this book series to the China Modern Literature Museum. Experts and scholars from the Chinese criticism community shared their insights and offered commentary on “Scholarship Series: Collected Works of Critics from Anhui,” and the authors discussed the stories behind their creations.
