On October 26, the 2024 World Cities Day main event kicked off in the Shandong Weihai Economic Development Zone. Over 2,000 guests from more than 30 countries and regions gathered to discuss sustainable urban development.

World Cities Day, initiated by the United Nations, is the first international day dedicated specifically to cities and was successfully proposed by the Chinese government.

During the event, a number of innovative research achievements were unveiled. The “Weihai Initiative” focused on the theme of co-building and sharing urban spaces, promoting concepts of green and low-carbon development, reform and innovation, inclusivity, happiness, safety, and resilience. Additionally, the “Shanghai Index” application report represents the first domestic provincial-level application of this index in the context of the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. The “Weihai Handbook: Global Community Sustainable Development Report” systematically summarizes experiences in sustainable development from communities around the world.

The event, running from October 26 to October 28, featured a thematic exhibition that captivated attendees, including demonstrations by Tesla’s humanoid robots. With segments titled “Enjoy the City,” “Great Homes,” and “Smart Living,” the exhibition attracted leading smart mobility companies such as Tesla, along with others in sectors like housing and smart home solutions, showcasing the latest advancements in urban livability and intelligent governance.

The 2024 World Cities Day main event in Weihai serves as a platform to highlight the city’s efforts in building a refined urban environment. In recent years, Weihai has concentrated on creating a refined city through meticulous planning, exquisite design, careful construction, detailed management, precise services, and smart growth, establishing the “Weihai Experience” in urban construction that emphasizes co-building, shared benefits, sustainable growth, and green development—setting a benchmark for similarly positioned cities worldwide.
