2023 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards announced, 214 awards (per person)
On October 23, 2023, the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards were announced, honoring a total of 214 achievements and individuals.
This year’s awards highlighted a range of innovative results focusing on the frontier technologies of tomorrow. Notable advancements were observed in sectors such as smart technology, health, energy, and materials, specifically emphasizing fields like information and intelligence, medicine and health, new energy, and environmental protection. A total of 114 achievements, representing 60% of the awards, showcased characteristics of originality, cutting-edge technology, and orientation toward future industries.
Breaking it down further, there were 29 awards in the information and intelligence technology category, 40 in biomedicine, 24 in new energy and environmental technologies, and 21 in new materials.
Young and middle-aged scientists play a vital role in Shanghai’s technological innovation landscape. Among the award-winning projects, there were 1,856 contributors, with 1,415 of them, or over 76%, being under the age of 50.
Two prominent figures, Wu Guanghui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief scientist at the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, as well as Ding Jian, a renowned pharmacologist and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, received the Shanghai Science and Technology Merit Award for their significant contributions.
Additionally, the Shanghai International Science and Technology Cooperation Award was presented to four foreign experts, including the internationally renowned mathematician Jürgen Jost.
